April Favourites

We’ve finally had spring temperatures in Norway! It’s amazing to see how even seagulls look much happier now.
April has been quite tough, to be honest and it may sound superficial but shutting the bathroom door in the evening and doing my skincare routine, instantly transfers me to a calmer place. Of course, I can’t forget about the troubles that me and my loved ones are facing but this ritual somehow makes me feel a bit better.

When I started using face masks in the morning because of the retinoid that is part of my evening skincare routine, it felt quite unusual at the beginning. I’m now used to it and it’s actually really nice to welcome the day with a fresh face. On the weekends, I like doing purifying masks and then to use a sheet mask but on a week day, I’d just go for something like the Peter Thomas Roth Therapeutic Sulfur Mask. It’s my favourite spot treatment, I’m in love with this face mask because it keeps my face clear and smooth. I use it twice a week even if I don’t have blemishes because it also prevents from getting new ones. It doesn’t dry out my skin but I always apply moistursing products after washing the mask off. I did a comparison between this mask and the Sunday Riley Saturn which I love, as well and you can have a read here.

While we were in Lisbon in March, looking for Ceramidin Cream, we found the Dr. Jart + Help Me Ceramidin Trial Kit. It contains the cream, the liquid and the gel-cream versions. My boyfriend has really dry and sensitive skin, so we wanted something that would give him moisture without irritating the skin. I started using Ceramidin Liquid as a serum or a moisturiser on its own while my boyfriend used the liquid followed by the cream and we both saw instant results. What surprised me was that he liked the liquid even more than the cream and I couldn’t believe that such a thin and runny texture could moisturise his skin so well. He began using only the liquid without applying the cream afterwards to compare and his skin was still looking soft and there were no dry patches anymore. We’ve now ordered the full size of Ceramidin Liquid and it’s become a staple for both of us. I love using it in the evening 20-30 minutes after applying Differin, it makes such a difference to my skin, it’s soothing and nourishing. It has a slight scent, absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a sticky residue. It doesn’t break me out which was my main concern and we’re really happy that it works well on both, dry and combination, blemish-prone skin.

I can’t believe I haven’t talked about my favourite lip balm in the past couple of months! I’ve featured it on my Instagram and I absolutely love it. Inkuto is a brand based in Finland but their founder is from Ghana. She helps empower women in her country and promotes the African natural resources that are economically and ecologically sustainable. They have different soaps, oils, body butters and they’re mostly known for the hand-crafted African Black Soap and the Shea Butter products. My favourite is their Shea Butter Lip Balm with Mango Oil, they also have ones with Coconut Oil and Raspberry Oil. It’s a beautiful little balm that melts onto the skin, feels smooth and shiny and if I leave it overnight, I wake up to the softest lips. The lip balm has a lovely light scent and a bit grainy texture which is the feature I love the most, as it gives a slight exfoliation to the lips. It’s wonderful and I’m really happy when I find small brands with great ideas behind them.

I’ve confessed multiple times my love for Rituals body products and although I’m not the biggest fan of floral scents, The Ritual of Sakura must be my favourite range from them. But it’s not your typical floral scent, it’s light and fresh and even a bit fruity but not overpowering or sweet, it’s perfect! I’ve been loving The Ritual of Sakura Shower Oil for the spring days. The pretty bottle has a pump which is really convenient and the oil turns into a milky emulsion in contact with water. It leaves a moisturising feel and makes my skin soft and nourished. I still use body moisturisers afterwards and I don’t think it would make a huge difference if you have very dry skin but it definitely has a hydrating feel to it. I love how the scent lingers in the bathroom for an hour or so, it’s a beautiful fragrance.

And speaking of fragrances, I started reaching for more spring/summer scents already in March because I just couldn’t wait any longer to wear them. One of my favourites is the beautiful Acqua di Parma Blu Meditarraneo Fico di Amalfi. It’s a unisex fragrance and it takes me to sunny Italy whenever I’m wearing it, I adore this scent. It’s not too sweet, it combines slight fruity sweet notes with woody and citrusy ones, it’s fresh and warm at the same time, sunny and juicy. Top notes are of Bergamot, Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon and Mandarin Wood. Heart is composed of my favourite Fig, Pink Pepper and Jasmine and the base is rich in Musk, Cedar and Fig Milk. I have a set of three of these that I often mix together but in the past few weeks, Fico di Amalfi has been perfect on its own. I’d highly recommend checking this scent out if you’re looking for a summer fragrance, it’s fresh and edgy, zesty and clean and it puts you in the mood for a sunny holiday. The only downside for me is that it doesn’t last as much as I would like to but I don’t mind spritzing it a couple more times a day, considering how handbag-friendly the bottle is.

I would love to know what your favourite spring and summer fragrances are and I hope you’ve had a lovely month.

September Favourites

The season of warm blankets and cosy knits has just started, so it is probably normal that this month’s beauty favourites post is a mix of summer and autumn bits.

Rituals have some of my favourite bath and body products but their skincare was never something I looked into. My boyfriend knows that I love lip balms and a few weeks ago, he passed by a Rituals store and decided to add the Smooth Operator Lip Balm to my collection. At that time my lips were pretty dry and this was the only lip balm I had with me, so I started using it the same night and I liked it straight away because of the minty feel and smooth texture but I really fell in love with it the next morning. When I woke up, my lips were so soft, smooth and hydrated that I couldn’t quite believe it. The formula contains Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil and Eucalyptus and it feels really moisturising and refreshing at the same time. There’s also a lot of product in the bullet and I’m sure it will be an essential for me in the upcoming winter days.

A few weeks ago I shared with you a bit about my skin issues because of the high temperatures in the summer and a sunscreen that probably wasn’t the right one for me. Since then, I’ve been using the La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ and I really like it. It has a milky texture and feels quite light on the skin. It doesn’t look too shiny on my combination skin and I don’t find it pore-clogging. I’m not sure what took me so long to try it but now I know why the reviews on it are so positive.

Weather’s getting colder and the skin on my body has been feeling quite dry and although Tom Ford Soleil Blanc Body Oil was a summer favourite of mine, I still keep using it. At this point, I like taking a warm shower at night and applying the oil while my skin is still damp. This has made such a difference to its condition and I really don’t want to see this bottle empty because I simply love the product. I’ve done a review on the body oil here, so you can take a look in case it’s interesting for you.

I’m pretty sure this is not the first favourites post where I’m featuring Weleda Skin Food. Most of us already know how amazing it is but I got new tubes for us (my boyfriend and I) and for my family, so this was one of the old ones that I decided to use as foot cream. I’ll usually apply a thick layer of Skin Food and then I’ll put on warm socks and let the cream do its magic. It’s a rich cream as you probably know, so having sticky feet is not the most pleasant feeling but once it’s fully absorbed, you see it was worth it. I also like applying it on my elbows and knuckles, it’s really hydrating and smells very fresh although some people hate the scent.

In this post, I said that I love Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Mood Exposure and I think it’s worth the splurge. Since I got it, it’s been constantly in my makeup bag but I feel like I’ll be using it even more in the autumn and winter months. It’s just a beautiful finely-milled powder, they have a gorgeous selection of shades and they’ve just released their holiday face palette that looks stunning!

I can’t believe we’re already in the last three months of the year, time’s flying and I feel like we’ll be soon talking about Christmas preparations.

Handbag Beauty Essentials | Summer 2016

DSC_0374postMy handbags and shoulders tend to carry a lot of stuff, so in the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to narrow down the content. Starting off with my beauty bag, I realised I keep many products that I don’t actually reach for when I’m out and about.

Here is the current situation of my (now) tiny beauty bag which is updated for the summer season, as I don’t really carry around a face mist in the winter, for example.
One of the most important things for me is a do-it-all concealer because I have really dark circles under my eyes but it’s also good to have something that can hide imperfections around the face, as well. Clinique Airbrush Concealer is supposed to be more of a brightening concealer but the shade I have does a great job at both, covering blemishes without drawing attention to them and making the under eye area a bit more fresh-looking. I wish I could find another mini of this concealer, it’s so handy!

It’s always good to have a tinted lip product that is also hydrating and looks good. It just makes it easy to use on the go, you don’t need a mirror and it gives life to the face while caring for the lips. I’m currently enjoying this Estée Lauder Genuine Glow Reviving Oil Lip Tint* (review here) from their new collection. It’s one of those products that go clear on the lips but then it enhances the natural shade of every woman’s lips to create a glowing rosy lip.

Blotting papers are a must-have for me because I have combination skin and I’m still trying to find and experiment with different ones but for now, I keep relying on my Essence All About Matt! Oil Control Papers.

Face mists are a huge love of mine, I use them all year round but I have them in my handbag only in the summer because cold air and damp skin is definitely a bad combination. The new REN Flash Defence Anti-Pollution Mist* (review here) is so fine and lovely that perhaps, the person next to you wouldn’t even feel it. However, I mist my face only when I’m alone and there’s nobody around me, as it can be disturbing and not very pleasant for the others. I won’t hide, I use the mist more than 5 times a day, before my make-up, after applying it, on top of it throughout the day, it’s refreshing, it has amazing ingredients and makes the skin radiant.

I used to have dozens of different face creams for every area in my handbag but now I think a good multi-purpose moisturiser is everything I need. The German Kaufmanns Haut-und-Kinder-Creme is perfect when you have dry lips or cuticles, I also use it on my hands if I don’t have a hand cream, my boyfriend uses it on his face because he has really dry skin, especially when it’s cold and actually, we have a tube at home, different ones in my bags, in his car…just everywhere.

Speaking of hand creams, I absolutely love this mini of the L’Occitane Shea Delightful Rose Hand Cream. I’ve already shared with you many times that L’Occitane hand creams are some of my favourites out there. I adore their unique scents, their moisturising properties and the fact that they don’t feel sticky.

Last but not least, another L’Occitane product that I’ve already mentioned a few times but it’s just one of my biggest loves at the moment. The Cherry Blossom Solid Perfume is perfect for the summer, it’s fresh and a bit sweet, it’s fragrance-free and when you apply it, it melts onto the skin to leave this beautiful scent. I’ve had the soap from the same series, the hand cream, the shower gel and now I might need the eau de toilette and the roll-on versions of it.

These are the beauty items I need on a daily basis in my handbag and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, considering how many I used to carry around. What are your handbag beauty essentials?

February Favourites

DSC_0865postFebruary has been such a cold and snowy month in Norway that I’m really looking forward to spring and sunshine!

I’ll have to start my monthly favourites with a lip balm because it has been a real saviour for my lips in the past few weeks. Kaufmanns cream is a relatively thick multi-purpose baby cream that works wonders applied on my lips. Thanks to this little tube, there’s no sign of the cracked and bleeding lips caused by the fierce wind in Norway.

Another skincare item that I’ve been loving is the Dermalogica Clear Start Overnight Treatment. It reduces the redness and the size of spots without drying out my skin and after a couple of applications, the blemishes are significantly diminished.

Dior has always been an impressive brand for me but in the past few months, their products really won my heart. That’s why I have two Dior items in my February favourites. Dior Addict Lip Glow in 005 Lilac (review here) has been on my lips for almost two months now and each day, I love it more and more. This lip product looks different on everyone, as it gives the lips a natural flush of colour that suits the skin tone of the woman who is wearing it. The formula of the balm is enriched with Wild Mango and Luffa Cylindrica to protect and moisturise throughout the day. It looks really flattering while conditioning the lips.
The ‘hardest to get right’ make-up item for me is foundation because I have combination skin but I also want to achieve a natural look with good coverage. The new Dior DIORSKIN Forever Perfect Skin-Perfecting Foundation SPF 35 (review here) is everything I want from a base to be! It’s lightweight and long-lasting, it’s matte but luminous, it’s buildable, looks natural and it’s just good skin in a bottle.

NARS Audacious Lipstick in Anita (review here) is the lipstick I reach for whenever I want an opaque and sophisticated vintage rose shade that feels comfortable on the lips and lasts a really long time. It has an incredibly special sentimental value for me and it’s one of my most-worn lipsticks in the month of February.

What have you been loving during the shortest month of the year?

Mid-Day Pick-me-ups

DSC_0417post DSC_0418postI believe many of us think that their skin feels and looks a bit ‘meh’ in the middle of the day. Especially, if you have combination skin like I do, you notice that the T-zone gets a bit more oily, foundation may go patchy on some areas and in the winter time we all lack radiance.

A few simple steps work really well on me and I hope this post will be helpful for some of you, as well.

Usually, in the middle of the day I need to blot because my combination skin doesn’t really care if I powder or not, if I use a mattifying foundation or not. I keep the Essence All About Matt! Oil Control Papers in my handbag and they really help me get rid of the shine. It’s really hard for me to find blotting sheets, so in case you have any recommendations, feel free to share.

Then, I’d go with a concealer just to brighten up the under eye area and to hide any imperfections around the face. At the moment, I’m carrying the Catrice Allround Coverstick in my bag because it’s really versatile. It’s creamy enough to be applied under the eyes but has decent coverage and lasts really well throughout the day. Also, it doesn’t take much space and you don’t have to dip your fingers in a pot concealer.

I need to powder to set the concealer and to just prevent the T-zone from shine after blotting, so I’m using the Bourjois Healthy Balance Powder. It’s really finely milled, smells nice and doesn’t look cakey. It mattifies the skin but also gives it a bit of a glow and slight coverage.

The next step really helps me keep my skin hydrated in the colder months. I use a mist with Norwegian thermal spa water and I’ve actually already mentioned Maya Water Facial Mist with Organic Acai* because I really love it. But you have to be very careful in the winter and not go out straight away or spray when you’re out in the cold because if your skin is damp or wet, it will get damaged.
This mist is so fine and lovely, the mini bottle fits perfectly in my handbag, contains Vitamin A, C and E, Zinc, Iron and the fatty acids Omega 3, 6 and 9. I use it as a toner, underneath my make-up or on top of my make-up for a quick boost of hydration and glow. It doesn’t make me look greasy, it just gives me moisture and radiance and I’m in love with it.

Another product that I adore is lip balm and especially this L’Occitane x Pierre Hermé Paris Jasmin Immortelle Neroli Lip Gloss. It’s actually something between a balm and a gloss. It’s very nourishing thanks to the Shea Butter added but has a sheer glossy pink tint that brightens up the face while hydrating the lips. It also smells really beautiful and feminine.

Last but not least, would it be a mid-day pick-me-ups post without a nice snack? I love this Corny Peanuts & Milk Chocolate Bar, it’s not the healthiest or the best one but I like nuts and chocolate and if I need a bit of energy in the middle of the day, it does the job for me.
